CS 3409 - Fundamentals of Computer Technology

Catalog Description:

An introduction to computer hardware and the technologies used to create, capture, and communicate digital information. A laboratory provides hands-on experience with the subject matter, e.g., electricity, combinational and sequential digital circuits, VLSI, etc.

Prerequisite:

Course Objectives:

1.

Basic understanding of electricity [HS physics level] Rudimentary info. on semiconducters and CMOS technology. Relation to digital logic.

2.

Intro. to digital logic design: combinational and sequential circuits, FSMs, registers (counters and shift registers), PLA-type devices, what clock does.

3.

Communications concepts: parallel & serial transmission, asynchronous and synchronous communication, rudiments of information theory, network terminology

Notes:

Fall 2010, course is proposed to be deleted and replaced by new course CS 2420, Digital Logic.
