Professor Spotlight: Yijuan (Lucy) Lu

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 Spotlight

A brief interview with Computer Science Professor Dr. Lu:

Dr. Lu is an assistant professor here at Texas State.

1. What made you choose Computer Science as your field?

Before choosing computer science as my undergraduate major, I had never seen or used a computer before.  I viewed it as a t.v. and felt that it was amazing.  After choosing computer science as my major, I have come to love it.

2. Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Hefei (city), Anhui (province) in China.  It is the capital city of Anhui Province and it is close
to Shanghai.  Hefei is one of the four education centers in China.  There are many good universities in
Hefei.

3. What are some of your hobbies outside of the University?

I like traveling, dancing, music, and reading.  I like to travel to different places. I also like dancing very much.

4. What are some of your research interests within computing?

My research interests include Multimedia Information Retrieval, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition, and Bioinformatics.

5. What advice would you give the students in our department to succeed in their field?

I think the confidence and persistence is the most important thing. Sometimes, I feel when students face the difficulty, they will choose to give it up.

In fact, persistence is the key point for any person to make success in their life. Everybody will face all kinds of hardness and difficulty in their study and work. But only the person who can face it and find a solution to solve it, can finally succeed.

6. Where did you get your degree(s)?

I got my PhD degree from University of Texas at San Antonio and my bachelor degree from Anhui University at China.

Professor Spotlight: Dan Tamir

Sunday, November 30th, 2008 Spotlight

A brief interview with Computer Science Professor Dr. Dan Tamir.

Dr. Dan Tamir

Dr. Tamir is an Assistant Professor here at Texas State. He encourages all students to work with faculty on the many active research fields in the Computer Science Department. Dr. Tamir recently gave a lecture to EXE on several research options for Master’s Thesis in the reformed department of Computer Science.

What got you interested in Computer Science?

I was always interested in Math, computer science, and engineering. I applied to mechanical engineering but based on my scores in standard tests the school suggested to switch to electrical engineering instead. This eventually led to a career in computing.

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Jerusalem and went to a reputable high school there. At age of 18, I started the compulsory service in the military. Later, I went to a Kibbutz, and then, at the age of 24 years, I started studying electrical engineering. I obtained BS and MS in electrical engineering in Israel and PhD. in computer science at the Florida State University. After completing the PhD, I decided to stay in the US.

What are your hobbies outside of the University?

*Laughs* My work is my hobby.

What are some of your research / computing interests?

Image and signal processing, computer vision, data compression, data mining, clustering, classification, pattern recognition, computer architecture, computer graphics.

What advice would you offer Texas State CS Students to help them succeed?

Be serious about what you do. Always be skeptical. Learn to learn while you are here. Be self-critical. Try to interact with faculty as much as possible through research and independent study.

What is your favorite Tech Gadget?

I don’t really follow technology, I let technology follow me. *laughs* (Does own an iPod, however, and is impressed with it).

If there is one thing you would like the CS students to know about you, what would it be?

I am very interested in working with students. I’d like them to know that.

EXE on YouTube!

Hooray! We now have an EXE YouTube channel. We’ll post various videos on there from events that we hold, interviews we do, etc. SUBSCRIBE TO US!
For now, check out this video Jen put together last year from our Halo Tournament with Microsoft: embedded by Embedded Video

Texas State Technology Day!

For those of you that haven’t yet heard through the grapevine, we’re in the middle of putting together an event for next spring that will whet all of your techy, gadgety, video-gamey, whistles.
The Texas State Tech Day will be a festival (of sorts) giving light to all of the various diciplines with their hand in technology. I won’t go in to too much detail as of yet because we are still working on it but we hope to get speakers from all areas on their current ‘cool’ technology in the works. We’ll also hopefully be getting some attendance from companies that you folks will definitely be interested in (of course including Microsoft and Sun Microsystems). We’re hoping to throw in a charity gaming tournament where you can frag your way to generous victory! Stay tuned for more updates on this and if your organization or company is interested in participating please email us!
Until Next Time,
EXE

Professor Spotlight: Hongchi Shi

Thursday, October 16th, 2008 Spotlight

Computer Science Department Chair/Professor

Dr. Shi has done research in:

  • Parallel and distributed computing
  • Internet & web technologies
  • Image Processing
  • Neural Networks

His current research interest is in wireless sensor networks.

Why are you a computer scientist?
“In High School in China, Computer Science was not popular; however, I was good at math and CS was a new field so I decided to study Computer Science.”

Why should we as students become Computer Scientists?
“There are many opportunities in the field of Computer Science today.  CS plays an important role in industry.   Computers are all around us and society benefits from Computer Science.”

How has technology changed your life?
“My first experience with computers was with a mainframe and punch cards.  As an undergraduate, I didn’t have much opportunity to use computers.  At that time, computers were kept in secure rooms almost like clean rooms.  My first introduction to the PC was in graduate school.  Today, computers are everywhere: from our cars to our cell phones.”

What advice would you give to CS students to help them succeed?
“Study the fundamentals.  The field of computer science is changing very rapidly, but the fundamentals always apply.  The most important thing for a CS student is to learn to think about things.”

What are your goals for the CS Department?
To develop a sense of community between CS students , Faculty and staff
To become a PhD granting department.  Dr. Shi expects to see this happen in 4-5 years.

One thing Dr. Shi would like students to know is that he is here and he is available and wants to help.  His “door is always open”.
