Short Bio

Sampath Jayarathna is a second year Graduate student at the Human Computer Interaction Laboratory,  advised by Dr. Oleg Komogortsev. Currently he is researching on the sensitivity analysis of the two-dimentional oculomobor plant mathematical model for saccadic eye movement trajecotory prediction.

Before coming to Texas State for his MS degree in Computer Science, he earned his B.Sc. (First class honors) in Computer Science from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, and B.IT. (External) from University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

His research interests are in the area of  Brain and Cognitive Science, Computational Neuroscience, Human Oculomotor Plant Modeling, Man-Machine interaction (MMI), and Artificial Life (Alife). Within this context he is currently researching human vision &  two-dimensional oculomotor plant saccadic trajectory prediction with its applications toward Biometrics. He received prestige Sigma Xi grant-in-aid of research grant “twice” for his proposals on Biometric identification and mTBI patient’s deficiency in the oculomotor function.

Sampath is currently serving as the College of Science representative for the Associate Student Government -Graduate House  and  also serving as a Committee Member for the Equity and Access Committee, Texas State University - San Marcos.  He is an associate member of Sigma Xi research society, and a graduate student member of IEEE CS, and ACM professional societies.

Research Collaborations

2D Oculomotor Plant Mathematical Model Development (2DOPMM)
Advisor: Dr. Oleg Komogortsev

Goal:
Create anatomically accurate Oculomotor Plant (eye globe + extraocular muscles) model.
Motivation: Improve understanding of the Human Visual System. Research new strategies for eye movement prediction for eye gaze guided computer interaction. Measuring extraocular muscle effort for usability evaluation. Neuronal control modeling for biometric research.

Biometrics - Collaboration with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Advisors: Dr. Oleg Komogortsev, and Dr. Cecilia Aragon (Berkeley Lab)

Goal:
Research new methods that allow a person's identification based on the eye movement and the oculomotor plant metrics.
Motivation: Biometric methods employed today such as fingerprint identification and iris recognition can be technically breached by creating a model of a finger or a retina by using holographic methods. The properties of the eye movements allow to conduct a behavioral evaluation of a person potentially allowing to strengthen the security of the identification.

Physical Therapy Research - Collaboration with Department of Physical Therapy Texas State
Advisors: Dr. Oleg Komogortsev, and Dr. Denise Gobert (Physical Therapy)

Goal:
Research cognitive and oculomotor function in persons with mild Traumatic Brain Injuries (mTBI). Measure response to customized exercise including balance retraining or oculomotor training. Develop oculomotor exercises that allow to alleviate mTBI symptoms.
Motivation: Current treatment regimens fail to address the co-morbidities common to patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). As clinicians struggle to treat patients with acute and chronic mTBI, they continue to be challenged by the complex sequelae of symptoms or “symptom cluster” which includes cognitive, behavioral and physical dysfunction. This project addresses the recent evidence which suggests that a variety of oculomotor and sleep disorders are interrelated in persons with mTB and should be addressed during rehabilitative treatment protocols.
